Family Medicine vs. Internal Medicine:
Which one is right for me?

Family Medicine and Internal Medicine are specialties that fall under the broader umbrella of Primary Care. Family Medicine treats patients as young as newborns all the way up to senior adults, whereas Internal Medicine only treats adults ages 18+.

Additionally, Family Medicine diagnose and treat a wide variety of medical conditions. They also treat minor illnesses, help patients with weight loss, perform routine checkups and wellness exams, as well as offer preventative care like immunizations. They can also perform in-office procedures, such as mole removals, pap smears, ear wax removal, wound care, and incision and drainage of abscesses and cysts.

Family Medicine is a great choice if you are looking for a provider to treat your children or your entire family. If you lead a healthy lifestyle with no chronic conditions, Family Medicine may be the choice for you.

Internal Medicine specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing more complex, long-term diseases. This includes diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and arthritis. For adults living with one or more chronic conditions, Internal Medicine may be the best route due to Internal Medicine providers' specialized training in helping these patients manage their chronic disease.

Both Family Medicine and Internal Medicine healthcare providers take a collaborative approach by working alongside any subspecialists (i.e. a cardiologist or urologist) you may be seeing. If a subspecialist is needed to treat a specific condition, your provider will refer you to the necessary provider.
