Upson Regional Medical Center recognized Maggie Maguire, NP with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Maggie is a nurse practitioner in Upson Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Department.
The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by members of the family of Patrick Barnes, a 33-year-old who died of complications related to the auto-immune disease ITP. Patrick’s family came up with the idea for the DAISY Award, as a way to recognize the extraordinary care he and the family received from his nurses throughout his illness. The acronym DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. What began as a thank you from Patrick’s family to nurses has grown into a meaningful recognition program embraced by healthcare organizations around the world.
Maggie’s nomination came from a family very close to her heart. She provided care for their son in his final hours after a tragic accident. Maggie comforted the family through this difficult time and continues to support them in their efforts to raise awareness for child water safety.
The family shared, “May 10, 2024, will be a day Patrick and I live with for the rest of our lives. Running into the ER with my limp baby, begging for help. Maggie worked effortlessly to save our baby; I have no doubt. Knowing Maggie was there rubbing his hair, talking to him, and telling him that his mommy loves him brings me comfort even almost a year later. Knowing Maggie is a mama, and that the love and prayers were from her heart brings me comfort. In a time when I couldn’t be there, Maggie was. She continues to be here, staying in touch and supporting all things Gavin Reid related. I can never imagine the trauma and heartache Maggie went through that night. My heart aches knowing she was placed in that role, but I know God put her there because He knew Gavin needed a mama’s touch and comfort. Although God saw fit for Gavin to go home to heaven, that night we still had a blessing, and that was Maggie.”
“We are fortunate to have Maggie as a member of the Upson Regional team,” shared URMC CNO Penny Nole. “She is a shining example of the caring and compassionate nurse that our patients deserve. Her dedication to serving our community is valued and appreciated by all who have the pleasure of working with her.”
Nominations for the DAISY Award can be submitted online at urmc.org, or in person at Upson Regional Medical Center.
