Thomaston, GA, January 24, 2025 – Upson Regional Medical Center is thrilled to announce that work has begun on a $40 million construction project to expand its ICU and Mother/Baby Unit.

Upson Regional Medical Center currently operates the only obstetrical, neonatal, and ICU services in its immediate service area, and is the sole facility in Georgia designated by Georgia DPH as a Level II Maternal Center. URMC’s expansion project is in response to the vital role it plays in healthcare in rural Georgia—recognizing the importance of enhancing quality, accessibility, and cost efficiency for growing volumes and strengthening its key role of serving the needs of the residents in its service area.

The expansion will consist of 39,500 square feet of new construction, 5,480 square feet of renovation, and will significantly improve the layout of the facility to adhere to modern standards of the highly-specialized services offered.

As construction gets underway at Upson Regional, patient entrances will be through the main lobby located on Cherokee Rd. or the “old front” lobby located on West Gordon St. Patients and employees will not be able to enter the hospital through physical therapy, the Wellness Center, auditorium, or cafeteria entrances through fall 2025. URMC will provide patients with transport assistance from the main lobby to their destination in the hospital if needed. Construction is estimated to be completed by summer 2026.

Upson Regional Medical Center CEO Dan Owens shared, “We are committed to providing the highest quality healthcare possible to our community. The expansion of our ICU and Mother/Baby Unit will ensure that patients receive the care needed in the modern and technologically advanced environment they expect and deserve.”
