The unit is staffed with registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and other support staff to provide individualized patient care.
We utilize a surgical process nurse. This is a primary RN who is responsible for your care beginning with the time you are prepared for surgery, and continuing after your return from the recovery room to your room. This RN coordinates and communicates directly with your surgeon, the anesthesiologist, the operating room and recovery room staff. The nurse is also in contact with your family to keep them updated on your progress through the surgical period.
One main goal for the surgical nurse is to provide you with pain control and comfort. The nurse also provides ongoing assessment to assure your recovery.
Rounding is done hourly during the day shift and every two hours on the night shift to assure attention is given to your needs and to address any needs your family may have. Your comfort and control of pain and/or other symptoms is important to us.
The Spectralink phone system is used by the nursing staff so that you may reach your assigned nurse at any time.
Your discharging nurse will discuss your discharge instructions with you and provide you with a written copy of these instructions. This information will include diet, medications, activity, and physician follow up instructions.
Other services available to you include a case manager and/or social service staff person to help plan and coordinate any discharge need you may have.
This unit also houses the Swingbed Services. This is an extended inpatient stay for surgical patients or other patients who may require additional rehabilitation therapies or education and training to better prepare them and/or their primary care givers for return to home. Qualification and approval for this level of care is determined by the swingbed team, which consists of the physician, the rehabilitation staff, the surgical unit nursing staff, the case manager and/or social services, and the medical/surgical director. Goals are set, according to patient level of function and needs and must be met.
For outpatient services the treatment room nurse can be reached at extension 7948 to schedule services 7 days a week.
